On the 7th the area had this year’s biggest snowfall to date at
around six inches. On Sunday the 11th we had freezing rain with only about
20 people able to make it out and up our hill for Mass. Ash Wednesday was
also a light turnout this year. Perhaps some people gave up receiving ashes
for Lent. The next day the temperature was a welcome 63 degrees.
A highlight of the month was the concert given by Grammy Award
winning artist Rhonda Larson on the 17th. Despite the snow returning just
before the start of the performance, there was a good turnout, which translated
into $650.00 of donations for our local Catholic Charities. We look forward
to welcoming back Rhonda and her husband Lee in the future.
On both the 20th and 21st the temperature shot back up again,
this time to the 70’s, once again with no snow to be seen anywhere. Until
the next day when we received payback for the warmth with a surprise four
inch accumulation of snow. That may have come as a surprise to the first
returning flocks of geese seen headed north the previous day. Still, it
did not keep the first returning robins from singing in the treetops
after the snowfall. By the 25th, the snow had disappeared again for the
remainder of the month. On the final day of the month, Br. Bruno made an
inspection of the bee colonies to see how they overwintered. For reasons
yet to be determined, the honey bees did not survive the winter.
