Mount Saviour Monastery

February 2017

The community was blessed with the arrival of Fr. Konrad Schaefer OSB from Cuernavaca, Mexico who facilitated our annual retreat from 2/2-2/6. Fr. Konrad spoke on the Psalms and Monastic Life, working through psalms 90, 16, 23, 133, 71, 39, 130 and 127 which included the topics of the Theology of the Consecrated Life, Community Life, Aging Monks, Acedia, Pardon, and The Divine Architect. Br. Ignatio was able to make a brief whirlwind visit to see the sights in the Big Apple from the 7th-11th before he returns permanently to Vietnam after Easter. By the third week of the month many of the spring birds had already returned and buds were opening on trees and shrubs due to the extended warm weather which had melted the little snow received this winter. Even a scurrying woodchuck put in an appearance. Our first lambs unexpectedly began arriving as well. This year it was discovered, too late, that ONE little ram, presumably happy if not positively euphoric, had been inadvertently left in among the ewes. Consequently, spring lambing is seven weeks ahead of schedule for approximately 60!! ewes that have been brought in early from the field to give birth. The count currently stands at 40 look-alike lambs. Happy Lent!
